Sammie Hasegawa, originally of Lawndale, Calif., taught Economics and Business Administration at Sioux Falls College from 1955 until his retirement in 1991 when he was awarded Faculty Emeritus status in 1991.
As a professor in the business department, Hasegawa mentored and educated young men and women for nearly four decades. In addition to his teaching duties, Hasegawa, who had a degree from Ottawa University in 1945 and another degree from Kansas State in 1948, served as USF’s men’s golf coach for several years, leading the Cougars to the Tri-State Conference title in 1967. He was named the Tri-State Conference Golf of the Year in 1967. Hasegawa was also an assistant coach for football and basketball for many years and was an ardent supporter of USF athletics.
He was the father of four children (Sammy Hasegawa, Stephen, Carol, Claudia) and his grandson Stephen is a 1973 graduate of Sioux Falls College.
