Courtney (Farrell) Wynthein, a 2006 graduate, she earned NAIA All-American honors four times and finished her career with 2,433 points, which set USF's all-time mark. Her total ranks third all-time in South Dakota collegiate scoring. She is also USF's all-time leading rebounder with 1,168 during her career from 2002-05. Wynthein also set the season mark for points with 720 in 2004-05 and had a program-best 341 rebounds also in 2004-05. She owns three of the top five season point totals with the 720 as well as 620 in 2001-02 for second and 599 in 2002-03 when she helped USF reach the NAIA Final Four in Sioux City, Iowa. Her rebound totals include the 341 in 2004-05 for first and had 298 for fourth all-time in 2001-02 and 291 for fifth all-time in 2002-03.
Wynthien helped USF with a 16-17 season as a freshman. She was also part of a special team that responded with a 23-10 and a trip to the NAIA Final Four in 2002-03. In 2004-05, she broke the school’s single season scoring record (599) en route to Great Plains Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year honors and earned first team All-GPAC and NAIA Third Team All-American honors. A second team NAIA All American as a sophomore, she averaged 17.0 points per game and led the nation in field goal percentage (61.7%). As a junior, she was third-team All-American and led USF to an upset of defending national champion Hastings College—a win made possible by Farrell’s three-point play as time expired.
Wynthein saved the best for her last season, earning her fourth-straight All-GPAC first team certificate and NAIA All-American honors. In that 2004-05 campaign, she crushed her own school record with 720 points and established the rebound mark of 341. She set numerous USF records, including all-time scoring (2,433), all-time rebounding (1,168), field goal percentage (61.8%) and led the nation in double-doubles. In fact from 2002-03 to 2004-05, Wynthein shot over 60 percent from the field each year with a school record 65.7 percent in 2001-02; 61.8 percent in 2003-04, 61.8 percent in 2002-03 and 60.5 percent in 2004-05.
She was also a four-time all-conference pick at first base for the USF softball team who as a senior helped lead the Cougars to their first-ever NAIA national tournament appearance. An FCA Honor Athlete, Purple Feather Award Winner and USF Female Athlete of the Year, Wynthein returned to USF for a master’s degree.
